When the government introduced its Food Guide Pyramid in 1992, it was hoped that it would help Americans switch to a healthier diet based on government dietary guidelines. But while the Pyramid was a popular and recognizable symbol, Americans have, for the most part, not switched to a better diet. In fact, studies show just the opposite. Americans are fatter and more sedentary than ever, dangerously so, according to many experts. In order to hopefully reverse this trend, the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services have revised and improved the old Pyramid into an interactive personalized food guide system.
