Podcast 36 - Modern Mythology with Christopher Knowles

In this episode, we’re joined by author Christopher Knowles. The discussion revolves around his new book, “Our Gods Wear Spandex, The Secret History of Comic Book Heroes.” We talk about the history of comic books and how the ideas contained and promoted in this medium can be traced directly to esoteric and occult concepts.

“The collision of science, morality, and magic is being played out hundreds of times a month in comic books and other media, showing us the implications of superhuman potential. Is this an unconscious form of preparation for an inevitable shift in human reality? Should we pay more careful attention to the visionaries and lunatics who anticipate the future in comic-book storylines? In that supernatural realm called the human imagination, comic-book creators like Alan Moore and Alex Ross may be time-travelers, forecasting the future for us and showing us the way. It’s funny how it all seems so similar to the ancient myths. The past and future are always with us.”

- Christopher Knowles, “Our Gods Wear Spandex, The Secret History of Comic Book Heroes”

Chris’ new book does a fantastic job of explaining how comic books relate to ancient mythology and the New Age. It is well-written, and very finely illustrated by Joseph Michael Linsner. If you have any interest in comic books, their history, and their connections with occult and esoteric ideas and mythology, you will definitely want to pick it up. The connections that Knowles highlights in his book have always been there, but it isn’t until now that they have been fully exposed by someone who understands their significance. Our modern mythology may indeed just be repackaged classics from ancient times. This book is not only fascinating, but fun as well.

Well, it seems that when I went in to Acme Comics and Records this week I made the decision to stop collecting monthy comic books and started my collection of trades/graphic novels. Why? Well, listen and find out. (It’s only 1 minute long.)

Dave and Chris cover E3, the gaming expo that wrapped up in Los Angeles more than a week ago. Now you know that these guys have spent all of that time working on in-depth analysis of where the industry is going with the next generation. They have their picks of what was cool, spun in that cooky way that their fans have come to love. Yes! They do to have fans! Well they have a couple listeners.Okay, at this point they may have more haters than listeners, but they will not let that be discourage them. Do your worst El Nacho!!! You are no match for these two. Although if you just let tem go, they will probably just destroy themselves.

Bonus feature: Play the That’s Good to Know Drinking Game. Every time Dave says “Guns of the Patriots” or when Chris says “360” take a shot. You will be drunk inside of 15 minutes, which is the only way that their jokes are going to seem funny to you.

This is an ambush I pulled on Mike during a seminar/class talk he was giving at a college in Minneapolis.

The only useful information here is that we launch on October 12th, 2005 and it’s a talk show about comics, movies, T.V., music or whatever we feel like going on about at the moment.
