Jay Dick is the Director of State and Local Government Affairs for the Americans for the Arts in Washington D.C. Jay is responsible for building working relationships with state arts advocacy and service organizations and with state elected officials. With the AFTA mandate to influence the policies that promote state funding for and expansion of the arts, Jay works closely with the Arts Advocacy Captains in each of the 50 states.

AFTA just completed a comprehensive study – Arts & Economic Prosperity III: The Economic Impact of Nonprofit Arts and Culture Organizations and Their Audiences documenting the key role played by the nonprofit arts and culture industry in strengthening our nation’s economy. This study demonstrates that the nonprofit arts and culture industry is an economic driver in communities—a growth industry that supports jobs, generates government revenue, and is the cornerstone
of tourism.

AFTA works to foster an environment in which the arts can thrive and contribute to the creation of more livable communities. Partnerships with local, state, and national arts organizations; government agencies; business leaders; individual philanthropists; educators; and funders are developed and maintained throughout
the country.

Jay received his B.A. in political science with concentration in American history from Grinnell
College in Grinnell, Iowa.

If I were not me
who would I want to be

I would want to be a princess
who lives in a fairy tale.
My prince charming
would be the most handsome guy,
one who is so kind;
and my parents the King and Queen
would be most lovable and not be mean.

Everyday,
Prince Charming and I
would roam the palace;
watch the flowers bloom.
Trees would grow tall and strong.
We would lie on the green meadows
watch the clouds float by.

We would drink fine wine
from the thirst quenching streams;
bathe in the warmth of the golden sunshine.
We would ride on dragons that fly in the sky;
and our birds could sing
sweet melodies that travel afar.
and our town folks would live
in peace and harmony.

Then, Prince Charming and I
would live h-a-p-p-i-l-y ever after.

James E. Faust, First Presidency

BYU Devotional, March 2005

“Some time ago I was walking in the center of Salt Lake City on my way to City Creek Canyon. A car with an out-of-state license plate was driving by. The driver pulled over and asked, ‘Where is the church of the Mormons?’ I assumed that he was thinking of some place or building. I took time to point out the tall Church Office Building, the stately Church Administration Building, the magnificent temple, and the historic tabernacle (the Conference Center had not yet been built). He thanked me and went on his way. . . . I could have answered differently. I could have pointed to my chest and said that the Church should be first and foremost in our hearts. Then the traveler would surely have been somewhat bewildered. But that response would have been more accurate than my directing him to our beloved, magnificent, sky-piercing spires; the great majestic dome; and the other world-famous monuments and edifices—wonderful and unique and great as they are. It would have been more correct because the Lord said, ‘The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.’ The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should be in our hearts, and, when it is in our individual hearts, it will also be in our great buildings of worship, in our lovely educational institutions, and in our magnificent temples, as well as in our homes and families.”

Sally H. Barlow, Professor of Psychology, BYU

BYU Women’s Conference 2000

“Why is the Holy Ghost so important? Different parts of me answer in different ways. As a psychologist I think it is because anything that activates the higher mental processes of our brains is better than mere appetite; as a mother, it is because the Holy Ghost prompted me to be patient; as a neighbor, it is because he reminded me not to yell at the kids when they broke my window; and the list goes on. You could say, ‘Well, that’s just good civilized behavior that makes common sense.’ True. Still, everything good comes from God. And somewhere in that mix of my doing the right thing and the prompting of the Holy Ghost exists the very real influence of Jesus Christ, and the forms and functions of the Holy Ghost testify of Him. Christ is the answer to all the world’s pressing problems.”

Susan W. Tanner, Young Women General President

General Young Women Meeting, March 2003

“To be steadfast in Christ implies keeping covenants. Each week we renew our baptismal covenants to take His name upon us, to ‘always remember him,’ and to ‘keep his commandments.’ We are steadfast in Christ when we do these things, and our spirits are lifted and our hearts are filled with love. Simply stated, when I keep my covenants, I feel hope and I feel love.”

General Conference, April 2005

So you are not the exception in the Church. To you I wish to say how much the Lord loves you and trusts you. And, even more, I wish to tell you how much He depends on you. ”
