WWR – Jim’s Picks – Cindy Kallet
Cindy Kallet. No hype. Just simple, true beauty. As Chip Renner at All Music Guide says, “She is not consumed by her music career, which could explain the reason she is not so well known as she so richly deserves.”
Stone Soup says: Kallet is not one of those singer-songwriters who lives on the road. She has never wanted music to be her entire life for she would miss the satisfaction of a fuller life, of being mother and environmental teacher. She’s worked at a wildlife sanctuary, run a wildlife museum and aquarium, has been a baker and carpenter and shucker of scallops, worn a white coat in an entomology lab (she studied biology at Bennington). A d as Scott Alarik wrote in The Boston Globe, “Being a mother has changed her vision, not inwardly toward her family but further toward seeing the world as a family home. She is concerned, and it shows in her music, about the world in which her children will live.” She doesn’t want her two sons to be “taken to kill other people.” Thus, there is a rare depth to her songs, sung with a voice that is, as Patty Larkin put it, “mesmerizing.” And Larkin, herself a master of the guitar, says, “I really like her guitar-playing.”
I want to say one simple thing to Cindy … thank you.
